Delhi University takes initiatives to curb ragging

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) held a proctorial board meeting to take measures for facilitating smooth induction of students for the academic session 2022-23. The meeting was attended by Delhi Police and DU officials where numerous decisions were taken to ensure discipline and prevention of ragging in the campus.
The colleges and departments have been ordered to enforce the rules and regulations issued from time to time, especially provisions of ordinance XV-B, XV-C and the sexual harassment of women at workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) act, 2013.
Students that indulge in ragging will face suspension, expulsion, cancellation of their degree or penal action under the university's anti-ragging rules.

The University needs to take the following measures in the academic year 2022-23
- The Supreme Court judgement on ragging where all students have been asked to give an undertaking at the time of admission to their respective colleges.
- DU will set up two joint control rooms in each north and south campuses from November 2 to November 11, 2022.
- The university has put up anti-ragging posters in English and Hindi at strategic positions in both campuses.
- Colleges, centres and hostels have been ordered to form anti-ragging, disciplinary committees and vigilance squads with the help of NCC and NSS student volunteers to monitor ragging.
- There will police pickets places outside every college with special assistance provided to women colleges. All acts of ragging will be dealt under the university's ordinances which gives authorities to take punitive action if required. Police assistance can also be sought whenever the situation arises.
- The Delhi Police has deployed women police in and outside the university campus to prevent ragging or eve teasing. Students living outside the campus have to ensure that their paying guest accommodation is verified by the local police to ensure safety.
- Du has already enforced patrolling to monitor and take action against ragging inside the campus.
- The UGC has formulated strict guidelines to curb ragging on their website ugc.ac.in. As per the UGC regulations, the principal, head or provost are required to submit weekly reports of the compliance of the anti-ragging measures during the first three months and a monthly report thereafter.
