Education ministry conducts study to understand learning levels of Class 3 students

Ministry of education is set to launch foundational learning study to understand learning levels of Class 3 students, establish baseline for NIPUN- BHARAT mission.
NEW DELHI: The Union ministry of education is set to launch a ‘foundational learning study’ to understand the learning levels of students at the end of Class 3 so as to set up benchmarks for reading with comprehension in 22 Indian languages, and to establish a baseline for the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN- BHARAT) mission.
The NIPUN Bharat mission by the education ministry aims to strengthen foundational learning at the national level. According to a statement from the education ministry, the study will be conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) across the country from March 23, to 26 in the sampled schools. The ministry expects participation from around 1 lakh students and 10,000 schools to participate in this study. The foundational learning study is being carried out also with the objective to provide the data for sustainable development goal (SDG) 4.1.1, to cover aspects of foundational literacy and numeracy.

“The ability to read and write, and perform basic operations with numbers, is a necessary foundation and an indispensable prerequisite for all future schooling and lifelong learning,” says the National Education Policy 2020.
The Foundational Learning study will assess the students’ ability to read according to their age. The study will assess whether the students can read at a certain pace with accuracy and comprehension. The study also includes assessment of students’ foundational numeracy skills.
