55% students receiving degrees, diplomas at IGNOU convocation are women: President Murmu

Over 2.79 lakh degree, diplomas and certificates conferred at IGNOU's 36th convocation. President Droupadi Murmu was the chief guest at the event.
NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) conducted its 36th convocation ceremony today. President Droupadi Murmu awarded meritrious students at the event. IGNOU university conferred a total of 2,79,917 degrees, diplomas, and certificates to successful students in their respective programmes.
Speaking at the 36th convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Murmu emphasised that it is possible to create world-class new knowledge and science on a large scale by promoting Indian languages.
"I am happy to note that there are 55 per cent girl students among those who received their degrees, certificates and diplomas at the university. Girl students account for more than half of the students who have received gold medals today," she said.

The president also lauded thousands of jail-inmates getting education from IGNOU. This education will be helpful for the rehabilitation of jail-inmates and for them to start a better life after their release from prison, said added. The president also commended IGNOU's contribution in higher education by offering distance education and making education accessible to all.
While speaking at the convocation ceremony, IGNOU vice chancellor Nagesgwar Rao said that the university has taken many initiatives during the last year and how IGNOU has been working on multidisciplinary and holistic education as envisaged in NEP 2020. He also added facets like vocational and skill-based education, research and innovation, promotion of Indian languages and ICT enabled educations among other initiatives on which the University has been working on to realize the National Education Policy 2020 goals.

"Among (the) many important suggestions in the NEP - 2020, emphasis has been laid on feeling proud of India's heritage and on making the Indian languages the medium of instruction," said the president. "By promoting education in Indian languages, it is possible to create world-class new knowledge and science on a large scale," President Murmu added.
