IISER Thiruvananthapuram celebrates 11th convocation; 331 students awarded degrees

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) celebrated its 11th convocation at its campus in Vithura, Thiruvananthapuram on July 23, 2023.
The convocation was attended by Koppillil Radhakrishnan, former chairperson of ISRO and chairperson of the standing committee of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Council along with Arvind Anant Natu, chairperson of the board of governors of IISER TVM.
A total of 331 students were awarded degrees across various disciplines. The degrees conferred included 189 BS-MS, 73 MSc, 21 MS (Research), 36 PhD, and 12 integrated PhD students.

Radhakrishnan and Natu jointly awarded the institute gold medal, the director’s gold medal for academic excellence, school gold and silver medals, the best undergraduate researcher medals, the institute cultural award, and certificates of distinction to deserving graduates. Sharang Rajesh Iyer received the institute gold medal while the director’s gold medal for academic excellence was awarded to Ananthu M.
During the ceremony, J N Moorthy, the director of IISER TVM, presented a comprehensive report on the Institute's progress and developments.
“The Institute has swiftly begun to implement the New Education Policy, NEP 2020 and has formalized multiple exit options in its flagship BS-MS programs starting from the forthcoming academic year”, the IISER TVM director said.

K Radhakrishnan addressed the convocation and emphasized that IISER has played an important role in transforming Indian science. He encouraged the new graduates to channel their knowledge and skills to address pressing scientific, technical, social, and environmental challenges.
Natu congratulated the students and said, “The Indian education system is at crossroads and is undergoing a sudden massive expansion and liberalization. However, caution is warranted to ensure that there is no content dilution.”
The IISER TVM graduates over the years have excelled in various fields. They have secured faculty positions at the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and various Indian Institutes of Technology. They have also been placed in international universities and prominent organizations globally.
