NEW DELHI- The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is going to conduct the second semester of 2019-20 session through online classes which shall commence from June 8. Due to the prevailing situation of COVID-19 spread and precautionary measures through lockdown across India, classes could not be carried as per normal schedule. The institute conducted online classes for the summer term on an exploratory basis and has encouraged faculty to innovate and experiment. This shall help curb the academic loss for candidates and assist in carrying the further sessions at the normal pace.
IIT Gandhinagar’s Academic Senate has also approved changes in the already prevailing grading system in the institute.
New Grading System
The authorities have introduced a new grading system for this session wherein, letter grades will not be issued to students for the second semester. Candidates will be graded as P(E) for Pass (Emergency) or I/F as Incomplete/ Fail. Those candidates with a I/F grade will be given a second chance to improve to complete the course requirements and achieve the P(E) grade, otherwise they will be given an F grade.
Explaining the new grading system, Pratik Mutha, Dean (Academic Affairs), IIT Gandhinagar, said, “If a student’s performance does not warrant a ‘P(E)’ grade even after this evaluation, the ‘I/F’ grade will be converted to a traditional ‘F’ grade and the credits for this course will naturally not be counted towards the graduation requirements. Thus, an ‘I/F’ grade will not show on a student’s final official record. Neither the ‘P(E)’ nor the ‘F’ grades of Semester II, 2019-20 will be counted in the CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) calculation.”
