Calling it a long-awaited reform, the minister has also informed that a special task force has been formed for teaching technical engineering in regional languages.

“I think the overall quality will improve because when students understand concepts in their mother tongue, they can think better,” the minister told HT.

Many IITs such as IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee have already undertaken steps to promote the use of regional languages in their teaching in the first year, the report said.

It may be noted that the JEE Main exam was previously conducted in English, Hindi and Gujarati languages across the country. However, the official notification for JEE Main 2021 has not been announced yet and is much awaited among the student community preparing for engineering admissions in the upcoming session.

Addressing students in a webinar recently, Pokhriyal said that the ministry is examining the proposal to increase the number of JEE Main 2021 attempts to four times. Also, reduction of NEET, JEE Main syllabus will be considered for the coming session.
