JNU issues safety measures to prevent road accidents on campus

NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has issued an advisory for students to prevent road accidents in the campus. The university released the measures in view of the recent motorbike accident in which a student died.

“In view of the tragic motorcycle accident in the JNU campus a few days ago in which one of our students lost his life and two others were seriously injured the following measures are being recommended. You are advised to follow them in letter and spirit in order to prevent further road accidents in the campus,” JNU said in an official statement.

Last Saturday, BA student Anshu Kumar and his friend Vishal Kumar, a former JNU student, rammed their bike into two other students crossing the road. While Anshu lost his life, Vishal was in a critical condition. The two other students, Sachin Sharma and Mrigank Yadav were also admitted to the hospital. As per police investigation, Anshu was speeding and was not wearing a helmet.

The university has issued the following measures:

• Maximum speed limit is 25 km per hour for light and two wheeler vehicles and 20 km per hour for heavy vehicles.
• Pedestrians should always walk on the footpath and not on the road.
• Two wheeler riders (driver and pillion) should always wear helmet
• Four wheeler drivers and all other passengers should wear seat belts.
• Mobile phones should not be used by drivers of any vehicle while driving.
• Consumption of alcohol and other dangerous drugs is prohibited in the JNU campus.
• All the provisions of Central Motor Vehicle Act and Rules 1988/89 as amended from time to time are applicable in the JNU campus as in the rest of the country. All must abide by these rules.
• There should be no parking of any vehicles on any road in the campus. Parking should be only at designated places only.
• Any traffic valuation may be reported on mobile and WhatsApp. Photos and videos may also be sent.
• All the violations of above will be reported to the appropriate authority and action may be taken against the violator.
