Mumbai University Convocation 2025: Over 1.64 lakh graduates receive degrees

NEW DELHI: The Mumbai University (MU) hosted its convocation ceremony 2025 on January 7. The MU convocation 2025 ceremony was hosted at the Sir Cowasjee Jehangir convocation hall, MU campus. The MU convocation 2025 event was presided over by governor and chancellor of state public universities, CP Radhakrishnan. As per the official Mumbai University press release, a total of 1,64,465 students from various streams received their degrees. Out of the total 1,64,465 graduates, 401 students received PhD degrees, and 20 were awarded medals for their academic achievements.

During his address in MU convocation ceremony 2025 , Radhakrishnan emphasised the importance of preparing and publishing academic calendars at the starting of the year. He urged universities to declare results by June and conduct convocation ceremonies within a month to ensure students receive their degrees without delay.

Highlighting faculty shortages in colleges and university departments, Radhakrishnan called for leveraging technology to address these gaps and prevent disruption in students’ education. He encouraged students to adopt healthy habits and stay away from unhealthy habits.

‘Innovation and leadership key to India’s growth’

Abhay Karandikar, secretary, department of science and technology, GOI, was the chief guest. In his convocation speech, he highlighted the role of innovation and leadership in shaping a self-reliant and developed India.

Initiatives in line with NEP 2020

He outlined initiatives under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including the establishment of the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications.

VC Ravindra Kulkarni announced the annual report, detailing the university’s achievements. He also talked about the implementation of dual and joint degree programmes under NEP 2020 and highlighted the university’s excellence in research, including 11 patents by faculty members, infrastructural upgrades, and awards for academic and administrative excellence.

Rs 1 lakh crore fund for private sector research

Abhay Karandikar also discussed the government’s efforts to strengthen research ecosystems, such as creating a Rs 1 lakh crore fund for private sector research and a Rs 1,000 crore venture capital fund for the space economy.

MU Convocation 2025: 1,39,184 UG degrees conferred

This year, degrees were awarded to 1,64,465 students, including 85,511 female and 78,954 male graduates. Among these, 1,39,184 were undergraduate degrees, and 25,281 were postgraduate degrees. The faculty of commerce and management had the highest number of graduates, with 86,601 students, followed by science and technology (47,014), humanities (22,583), and interdisciplinary studies (8,267).
