Download EBookNEW DELHI: The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest, named Chhattra Sansad Gherav, at Jantar Mantar, Delhi today, June 24. The NSUI protest aimed to address the alleged NEET scam and hold the National Testing Agency (NTA) accountable. Lately, the NTA has been in the spotlight due to controversies over irregularities in NEET UG and the cancellation of UGC NET 2024. The key demands put forwarded by NSUI includes conducting NEET re-exam and banning NTA.
Addressing the crowd, NSUI national president Varun Choudhary emphasized the need to re-conduct NEET and ban NTA. "We demand that education minister Dharmendra Pradhan take immediate action to address the injustices of the NEET examination. Specifically, we call for the conduction of RE- NEET (Re-conduct NEET) and the dissolution of the NTA (NTA BAN) to ensure transparency and fairness in the examination process. If our demands are not met promptly, NSUI is prepared to escalate our protests on a national scale. We will fight for NEET students all over India under the leadership of our leader Rahul Gandhi Ji, " Choudhary stated.
NEET Controversy: Criticizing PM Modi for neglecting student concerns
He further criticized prime minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of neglecting student concerns post-election despite prior commitments. "Prime minister Narendra Modi, before the election, had a discussion with students and promised to address their concerns. However, after the election, he has been avoiding student issues. This negligence towards the student community must end," Choudhary remarked.
NSUI Protest: Escalation and detainment during march to parliament
Following the speeches, NSUI members and NEET students marched towards Parliament. The protest escalated as demonstrators crossed police barricades, leading to a lathi charge by the police. Many NSUI members, including Varun Choudhary, were detained during the protest.
NSUI's key demands
The NSUI have put forwarded the following demands
- Conduct RE-NEET : A re-examination to ensure all candidates have a fair opportunity, free from the irregularities reported.
- Ban on NTA: The dismantling of the NTA and the establishment of a more transparent and accountable body for conducting examinations.
The NSUI official statement read, "This protest marks a significant step in the fight for educational justice, as students from across the nation have gathered to voice their concerns and demand corrective measures. The NSUI is committed to standing by the students and ensuring that their voices are heard."
