NEP 2020: CBSE to launch two-year reading mission

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is going to launch CBSE reading mission 2021-23 to promote reading literacy on September 20 under the vision of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“The CBSE Reading Mission 2021-23, a two-year initiative to encourage students to read and engage actively with books,” a statement from CBSE said.

This project will help students to gain the critical competency of reading along with comprehension, the CBSE statement said.

The CBSE will provide Hindi and English teachers of more than 25,000 schools with quality-reading materials for students of Classes 1 to 8, the statement said. The board will also offer some student enrichment activities on building language in turn enhancing reading skills of students, the statement said.

CBSE Reading Mission

CBSE is collaborating with Pratham Books' Story Weaver and Central Square Foundation to launch the mission on September 20 at 3pm.

Under the CBSE reading mission 2021-23, the schools and teachers will have access to resources, children’s storybooks in English and Hindi languages for Classes 1 to 8.

CBSE is also extending the CBSE reading challenge (English and Hindi), organised for students of Classes 8 to 10, to Classes 6 to 7, the statement added.

“The Reading Mission will help build a culture of reading and the wholesome development of students by enhancing their vocabulary, deriving connections between stories and their own lives, and exposing them to new ideas,” CBSE further said.

Ahuja, IAS Chairman, CBSE will launch the two-year mission on September 20.

Recently, CBSE has added a new subject, applied mathematics in its curriculum for students of Classes 11 and 12. The new subject involves 80% marks for theory and 20% marks for practicals in the CBSE board examination.
