NEW DELHI: A month after withdrawing the guidelines under Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 on MBBS admissions, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has today notified the Competency Based Medical Education Regulation 2023. The regulation will be effective from August 1, 2023, the commission said.
“The new regulations are continuation and evolution of thought in medical education making it more learner-centric, patient-centric, gender- sensitive, outcome -oriented and environment appropriate,” it said.
The undergraduate medical education programme is designed with a goal to create an lndian Medical Graduate (IMG) possessing requisite knowledge, skills to function effectively as a physician of first contact of the community while being globally relevant, the commission said.
The Competency based Undergraduate Curriculum and Attitude, Ethics and Communication (AETCOM) course, as published by the Medical Council of India (MCI) will be the curriculum for the MBBS batches admitted from the academic year 2019-20 onwards, the regulation said. The regulations also notified the year-wise detailed curriculum for medical education.
It further directed medical colleges to organize admission timing and admission process in such a way that teaching in the first professional year commences with induction through the foundation course by August 1 of each year starting from academic year 2024-25. Admission of students will not be permitted beyond August 30 for any academic session and institutes that grant admission beyond this date will be liable to face such action, it added.
The new regulations also stated that the supplementary examinations and declaration of results should be processed within 3-6 weeks from the date of declaration of the results of the main examination for every professional year.
On June 12, the NMC issued the guidelines on MBBS courses, including the new norms on Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum, admission of PwD candidates, and the admission process in medical colleges.
