Schools, colleges closed today due to Karnataka bandh, Eid-e-Milad; state-wise updates

NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on today i.e. on September 29 on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad, Meanwhile, the Bengaluru has declared a holiday for schools and colleges, following the bandh called by pro-Kannada groups and farmers' organisations to protest the release of the Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Maharashtra chief minister office on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted: “The decision has been taken in the wake of Anant Chaturdashi and Eid e Milad falling on the same day i.e. September 28. All India Khilafat Committee has requested CM Eknath Shinde regarding this.”

The CMO said the decision was taken to manage the public gatherings properly as both Ananth Chaturdashi, the day on which Ganesh idols are immersed, and Eid-e-Milad were on September 28.

Schools affected due to Karnataka bandh

Educational institutions in Karnataka have been affected by the statewide lockdown of the 'Kannada Okkuta', an umbrella organisation for Kannada organisations. The administration has imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code in Mandya.

As part of the bandh from 6am to 6 pm today, there will be a massive protest procession from Town Hall to Freedom park in Bengaluru, in which people from all walks of life are likely to participate, the organisers said.

They have said that the bandh is for the entire Karnataka and that they will try to shut highways, toll gates, rail services, and also airports.

The Bengaluru bandh called by 'Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti', an umbrella outfit of farmers and Kannada organisations, and backed by the BJP and JD(S) on Tuesday in protest against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu evoked a partial response.

The Karnataka government has said that it will approach the Supreme Court on the issue. (w ith inputs from PTI)
