Telangana to launch 100 days reading campaign for Classes 1-9 from Feb 5: Report

Telangana schools will organise a library week from February 14 to 21, reading competition every Saturday, and celebrate Mother Language Day on Feb 21.
NEW DELHI: Telangana school education department has decided to launch a 100 days reading campaign for students of Classes 1 to 9 in the state from February 5, the Telangana Today reported. The objective of the campaign is to instill reading habits as well as to improve basic reading skills among students, it said.

Under the programme called READ (Read, Enjoy and Develop), teachers will have to ensure students read appropriate books according to their age in the school library everyday. Schools will have to allocate one library period for the selected classes, the report said.
The schools have also been instructed to form a panel of five students for each class in high school and a committee for primary school, the report said. The task of the committee would be to monitor the reading habits of students, issuing books and maintaining their records. It will also display a list of fluent readers to encourage other students, as per the report.

Schools will reportedly organise a library week from February 14 to 21 and celebrate Mother Language Day on February 21.
The schools have been further instructed to organise a reading competition every Saturday and reading festival every month which will include parents, community members and School Management Committee, according to the report.

“While the Mana Ooru-Mana Badi programme will develop and strengthen infrastructure in government schools, this campaign will help improve the reading and learning skills of the students which will eventually improve the quality of education,” S Vinayak, nodal officer of the programme was quoted as saying.
Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the nationwide ‘Padhe Bharat’ 100 days reading campaign on January 1, 2022.
