World Hindi Day 2023: DU organises lecture to celebrate, promote Hindi language

NEW DELHI: University of Delhi (DU) celebrated 'World Hindi Day' today by organising a lecture to promote Hindi language. The programme was held at the Vice Regal Lodge, convention hall at DU.

The chief guest of the event was IGNCA, member secretary, Sachchidanand Joshi, in his speech, he emphasised on enriching Hindi vocabulary and said that there is a need to include technical words of other languages in Hindi vocabulary. He also stressed that Hindi does not always need to be spoken with big words, using informal words is just as effective.

Joshi further spoke on the importance of mother tongue in language in the National Education Policy 2020 and said that because of the non-availability of curriculum in local languages, children studying in rural government schools are being deprived of higher education.

While giving his presidential address, DU, vice chancellor, Yogesh Singh said: " Hindi is a popular, easy and simple language, let it be like that. Hindi has never received government support, yet this language is continuously moving forward." He further added that that the language of government work was not Hindi in the British era and it is still not so after independence. He said that more or less a lot can happen regarding the prosperity of Hindi, just try to change the way of thinking.

Singh praised the south-Indian states for their cooperation in making Hindi the national language in the constitution and said that it did not get the same support from the north-Indian leaders. DU's vice-chancellor said that the prevalence of Hindi is increasing day by day as the Prime Minister of India addresses foreign countries in Hindi, the value of Hindi increases. He said that India will become a developed nation by 2047 and with that the status of Hindi language will also increase.

The event began with DU, president, Bhartiya Bhasha samiti, Niranjan Kumar gave a detailed view of the history and development of Hindi since 1857. The event concluded with professor of Tamil language, member of Bhartiya samii, Uma Devi said that it is pleasant that Hindi is moving forward, and that it is not moving forward alone but taking all Indian languages together.
