COVID-19: IIT Madras startup creates portable hospital unit

NEW DELHI: An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras supported incubator Modulus Housing, has developed a foldable and portable hospital unit, ‘MediCAB’, for COVID-19 patients.

Launched recently in Wayanad district in Kerala. The role of the portable unit is to detect, screen, identify, isolate and treat COVID-19 patients among local communities.

It can be installed within two hours by four people. “It comprises four zones: a doctor’s room, isolation room, a medical room or ward and a twin-bed ICU, maintained at negative pressure”, said in a release.

The startup collaborated with Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) which provided the inputs on the certifications and customisations necessary for the project.

Highlighting the innovations from startups supported by IIT Madras Incubation Cell, the chief executive officer Tamaswati Ghosh, said in a statement: “We are very proud of our startups who are working on a range of products that are vital to India's fight against COVID-19, from N95 masks , ventilators , affordable testing kits to portable hospital infra. They have quickly mobilised and repurposed their offerings in response to the situation and are striving to make a positive contribution to the nation's antivirus efforts.”

The startup was founded by two IIT Madras alumni in 2018.
