Delhi University begins new academic session with 64,288 UG students

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) begins its new academic session for undergraduate (UG) students from today, August 16. The university welcomed a total of 64,288 students who have been confirmed for admission to its various undergraduate programmes. The DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh conveyed his wishes to the newly admitted students.

The DU vice-chancellor informed that the academic year 2023-24 has a total of 64,288 students who have confirmed their admissions by August 15 at the end of the second round of the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). A total of 105,426 students received allocation offers in the first and second rounds.

Addressing the concern of ragging, Singh said, “DU is a completely ragging-free university. To avoid any untoward incident with any student, the senior students should give love and respect to the newly arrived students like younger siblings.”

Singh also informed that more than half of the admissions were secured by female students. Female enrollment has increased this year with 53 percent of female students getting admissions as compared to 47 percent of male students in the new academic session.

Dean of Admissions, Haneet Gandhi, provided insights into the college preferences of students during both rounds. Dyal Singh College, Hansraj College, Gargi College, Ramjas College, and Kirori Mal College emerged as the top five choices during the first round. Swami Shraddhanand College, Deshbandhu College, and Zakir Hussain College led the second round with the highest number of admissions, the dean said.

According to the dean, the top five programmes selected by students were BCom (hons), BCom, BA (hons) political science, BA (hons) economics, and BA (Hons) English.

Gandhi further said that 30,627 students chose to freeze their admissions, while 29,217 opted to upgrade. Approximately 8,010 students received their first preference, and 5,560 students secured their second choice.
