NEW DELHI: Delhi University has decided not to hold semester exams for first and second-year students. Students will be promoted to their next class based on their performance in the previous semester and internal assessment.
The decision has been taken as a one-time measure due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the country. DU’s notification on exams states: “In view of the prevailing situation of Covid-19 pandemic, it is notified hereby to all concerned that the Intermediate semester/term/year students shall be graded with adopting alternative mode for the same as conducting examinations for Intermediate semester/term/year students (second semester/term/ Ist year and fourth semester/term/IInd year students) in the conventional mode i.e. pen and paper is not feasible as per the existing government norms of maintaining social distancing and safety and health of the students.”
No Exams But Composite Grades
The DU decision is likely to benefit around one lakh students who enrolled in various undergraduate programmes in the university and its affiliated colleges. For students of intermediate semesters having no previous performance or who have not appeared in any previous semester or term examination, they will be graded based on their assignments.
Students of School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) will also be upgraded to their next level similarly.
DU Online Exams
However, all the ex-students of the first and second year of SOL and NCWEB will still have to appear for the Open Book Examinations (OBE) mode as per the date sheet notified for the academic session 2019-20.
DU has announced it will conduct the examination of final-year undergraduate students in an online open-book mode . It has also issued guidelines for OBE exams for all the final year students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate programmes, despite facing criticism from the majority of students and teaching staff.
