Fee hike for new admissions only, Jamia Millia Islamia clarifies

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has clarified that the revision in fee hike applies only to new admissions, and not to already enrolled students in the previous sessions. According to the official JMI statement, the revision is nominal and applies mostly to self-financed and a limited number of professional courses.

JMI has noted several media reports misrepresenting its recent fee revision and has clarified that the fee hike does not apply to all courses.

JMI further said that it has not undertaken any major fee revision in several years and aims to continue old fee structures, keeping in mind the view of present-day costs and rising inflation.

Furthermore, JMI said the marginal fee revision has been introduced only after considering deliberations by the University’s prospectus committee over several meetings spanning three months. JMI's revised fee structure was launched on March 6 to mark the commencement of the new academic session 2025-26.

JMI: Low fees for most courses

JMI continues to charge lower fees for most of its courses, making it affordable for universities, even after revision. The ‘modest revision’ not only aims to offset today’s inflation but also to strengthen basic academic infrastructure, including laboratories, digital facilities, cyber security, campus Wi-Fi, and other essential services to improve the overall student experience.

JMI further plans towards internationalisation and promotes friendly relations with its neighbouring countries. The university has reduced fees for foreign nationals from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations, and has lowered the fees for foreign nationals/NRI students applying to diploma programmes under the polytechnic. Besides, fees have been reduced for some courses in the management studies faculty.

“While continuing to provide high-quality education and innovative courses at some of the most affordable cost structures in the nation, JMI reaffirms its unwavering commitment to serving the socially and economically marginalised sections of society,” the official JMI statement said.

Also, the fees have been increased for a few courses, and there’s also been a reduction in other courses for this academic year.
