Maharashtra’s new university faculty recruitment rules emphasise academics, research, teaching
Maharashtra will resume recruitment of professors with 20% weightage to interviews. Only those who secure 50% marks will be eligible for final selection.

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra government has decided to resume the recruitment of teachers at universities with new assessment rules in place, informed higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil. Created to ensure transparency and impartiality, the new evaluation criteria gives 80% weightage will be given to academic qualifications, research, and teaching record while interview will carry 20% weightage.
Patil said that under the guidance of the Governor and chancellor, a grading system has been established for the recruitment of assistant professors , associate professors, and professors in universities across the state. This process will consider both academic credentials and performance in interviews.
“The combined evaluation will ensure a more transparent and impartial selection process. The academic qualifications, research, and teaching will be given 80% weightage, while the interview will carry 20% weightage,” he stated.
Only candidates who score at least 50% out of a total of 100 marks will be eligible for final selection.
University teacher recruitment process
During the interview process, Patil explained, the teaching ability or research aptitude of a candidate will be assessed on the basis of discussions during seminars, mock lectures, or the ability to use modern teaching and research technologies.
The interviews conducted by the selection committee will be documented through audio-visual recording. Once the selection process is completed, the recorded material will be sealed with the signatures of all committee members present.
The recruitment results will be announced either on the same day or the next day after the interview. This entire recruitment process will apply to the selection of assistant professors, associate professors, and professors.
The education minister further said that the ongoing recruitment process for teachers in universities will also be completed under this new methodology, and the same process will be followed for future teacher recruitments. This will enable a transparent and quicker selection process in universities. He further emphasized that this improved methodology will ensure the selection of quality teachers and help enhance the standard of higher education.
