Answering a question on the number of vacancies and sanctioned posts in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) schools, Minister Jayant Chaudhary stated that vacancies arise due to new school openings, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, employees going on lien, and school upgradations.
He added that filling these vacancies is an ongoing process, conducted in accordance with recruitment rules and government-mandated reservation norms. To ensure continuity in the teaching-learning process, teachers and other staff are also appointed on a contractual basis at the local level whenever regular or leave vacancies occur.
NVS Recruitment: Regular appointments since 2014
Since 2014, NVS has made 1,842 regular teaching appointments and 5,561 non-teaching appointments. NVS Vacancies: Rising contractual staff recruitment
Contractual staff recruitment has also increased over the years. Teaching staff hired on contract rose from 2,189 in 2014 to 3,437 in 2025, while non-teaching contractual staff increased from 268 to 1,432 in the same period. The ministry said these short-term appointments are made to meet urgent requirements and ensure continuity of student services.
“Regular appointment is made by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) through a direct recruitment process as per the recruitment rules of NVS, incorporating the reservation norms as notified by the Government of India from time to time. The staff are engaged on a contractual for short duration or on urgent need basis to protect the interest of the students,” the Jayant Chaudhary said.
