Over 2,000 PG students in private medical colleges not receiving stipends, finds NMC; warns of action

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) found out in a survey that 2,110 postgraduate medical students of private medical colleges are not getting stipends while 4,288 students said the amount is not the same as that being paid to students in government medical colleges. The commission warned the private colleges of strict action if they do not pay the stipends, that too, at par with government medical colleges.

1,228 students informed NMC that the stipend paid to them is taken back by the management. The commission conducted an online survey of undergraduate interns and PG medical students of self-financed or private medical colleges through Google form. IT received a total of 10,178 responses of which 7,901 responses came from PG medical students of 213 colleges of 19 states and two union territories.

“Balance responses were either from students of government medical college or DNB hospitals and some duplicate responses,” the commission said in an advisory.

NMC referred to the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER), 2000 which state: “The post graduate students of the institutions which are located in various states/ union territories shall be paid remuneration being paid to the Post Graduate students of state government medical institutions/central government medical institutions, in the state/union territory in which the institution is located.”

The commission directed all self-financed and private medical colleges to implement the regulations. “All the self-financed/private medical colleges are warned that NMC will take strict action for non-compliance of the provisions of the regulations of PGMER, 2000 if any complaint is received in future,” NMC further said.
