SC-ST students cell of IIT Bombay conducts open house on caste issues

NEW DELHI: The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a students cell for the students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay conducted an open house programme on caste issues today, June 29, 2022. The programme is being conducted to provide a space for the students of IIT Bombay to speak on their personal experiences, concerns and caste-related issues on the IITB campus. The event was held today at 5:30 pm at LH101, IIT Bombay.

APPSC claims that the open house event was a huge success with more than 80 individuals attending the event, which included students, faculty and non-teaching staff. They openly talked about their experiences of caste on campus. During the event, many issues of harassment due to the reservation, lack of representation in faculty and PhD, etc were raised, informed the student collective in a tweet.

According to APPSC, this is a first-of-its-kind event by any IIT in the last 60 years. The students collective also called for similar events at other IITs. "SC/ST students cell of @iitbombay is conducting an open house on caste where students can come and express their experiences and concerns, and talk openly about caste on campus, the first event of this kind by any IIT in the last 60 years. We want other IITs to do the same," tweeted the student cell.
