Tamil Nadu continues to remain one of the most competitive states for MBBS admissions. If not All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, aspirants aim for other popular institutions such as Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, Madras Medical College (MMC), and Stanley Medical College. These colleges witnessed high closing ranks in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Under Graduate (NEET UG) 2025 counselling. Category-wise cut-off data shows that candidates from general category required significantly higher marks for admission, while reserved categories saw comparatively lower closing ranks across several government medical colleges.

Tamil Nadu has recorded a steady rise in NEET participation over the years. In 2022, 57,215 candidates qualified NEET out of 99,610 who appeared. The number increased to 78,693 qualifiers in 2023 and further rose to 89,198 in 2024, reflecting growing competition for MBBS seats in the state. Despite the increase in MBBS seats over recent years, competition for top government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu remained intense across all major categories.

NEET UG cut-offs are influenced by several factors, including the number of candidates appearing for the examination, difficulty level of the NEET paper, availability of MBBS seats and category-wise reservation policies.

Top colleges see higher competition due to strong academic reputation, lower fees, better clinical exposure. Apart from these, factors such as hostel facilities, counselling rounds also play a key role in determining the final closing ranks.
