Task force, dashboard, committees to implement NEP 2020: Education Minister

NEW DELHI: Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal held a high-level meeting to review the progress related to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and suggested setting up a task force and two committees to facilitate its implementation. Plus, the ministry will set up a dashboard that will track progress on 181 tasks that have been identified for the complete implementation of the NEP 2020 ’s recommendations on higher education.

During the meeting, Pokhriyal suggested that the task force can coordinate between the higher education and school education departments of the education ministry to ensure smooth transition of students from schools to higher education.

The education minister also suggested constituting a “review committee” and an “implementation committee”, headed by secretary, higher education, to ensure speedy implementation of NEP 2020.

“A total of 181 tasks have been identified for implementation in higher education and a dashboard for monitoring the progress of these identified 181 tasks of NEP with clear timelines and targets may be prepared. A monthly and weekly calendar should be drawn up for implementation of the tasks so that every stakeholder is updated about its implementation,” reads the release.

NEP 2020: Research

Pokhriyal also pushed for the National Education Technology Forum (NETF) and National Research Foundation (NRF) -- both key features of the NEP 2020’s reform agenda -- to be established in 2021-2022. As per a statement issued by the ministry, Pokhriyal called upon the stakeholders to ensure synergy between the implementation of NEP and existing policies of the government. He also stressed on enabling linkages between the industry and academia for better results.

In July last year, the Union Cabinet approved the NEP-2020, which replaced the 1986 Education Policy, with an objective of universalisation of education from pre-school to secondary level. The NEP 2020 envisions one large multidisciplinary higher education institution (HEI) in or near every district, by 2030. The policy also envisions doubling the gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education by 2025, from the current 26.3% to 50%.
