Universities can send nominations for two awards carrying citation and Rs 10 lakh cash prize each before December 1.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the higher education institutions to send nominations for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)’s national level awards for 2024 and 2025. The colleges and universities can send nominations by December 1.
DRDO is inviting applications for the Dr Kothari Defence Science Award and Dr Kalam Defence Technology Award to recognise and honour the individuals who have exhibited exceptional research contributions in the field of defence science and technology. Each award carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
“These awards aim to acknowledge the outstanding achievements and innovations of the individuals serving in Government Organisation/Public Sector Enterprises/Private Organisations (Academia, Industry, R&D laboratories) and whose contributions have significantly impacted the advancement of Defence related research critical to our nation’s security,” said UGC.
The commission informed that the nominations should contain all relevant details specified in the format including major contributions made by the nominee (in about 100 words) and the details of such level of technology available elsewhere in the world.

The nomination will be accepted only through the ministry, departments, organisations, private agencies. The awards are open to all individuals serving in government organisations, public sector enterprises, private organisations (academic, industry, and R&D laboratories). While the Kothari award will be given to an individual for contribution in the field of basic research in defence science, the other award will be given for development in defence technology .
Selection of DRDO awardees
The nominations will be placed before a screening committee which will shortlist the nominations for consideration of the apex committee. The screening panel may interact with the nominee or evolve a procedure to recommend the individuals. The apex committee will finalise the names and put it before the defence minister for his approval.
