JNCASR's Umesh V Waghmare appointed DST secretary

Waghmare, who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, also holds a PhD in applied Physics from Yale University and carried out postdoctoral research at Harvard university.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of professor Umesh V Waghmare as the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), government of India.
According to the official order, Waghmare who is the president and professor of theoretical sciences unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru will take charge as the secretary, DST from the date of assumption of charge.
His tenure will be until the date he attains the age of 60 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, the order read.
Waghmare holds PhDs from Harvard, Yale University
Professor Waghmare, who graduated with a BTech in engineering Physics and the Institute Silver Medal from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) in 1990, joined JNCASR as an assistant professor in 2000, according to JNCASR’s official website.
He gained a PhD in applied Physics from Yale University, New Haven in 1996 and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University from 1996 to 2000.
Furthermore, he has also been an Adjunct Professor in Birck Nanotechnology Center of Purdue University from 2010 to 2012) and TIFR, Mumbai from 2014 to 2017.
Waghmare’s appointment was approved by the ACC and notified through the official order by the department of personnel and training, it added.
