Following singer Zubeen Garg’s death, Assam postpones half-yearly exams

52-year-old Assamese singer died in an accident in Singapore where he was supposed to participate in the North East India Festival.
Following the sudden demise of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the state government has postponed the half-yearly exams scheduled for tomorrow, September 20. Assam higher education minister Ranoj Pegu directed schools to put the exams on hold until the cremation of his mortal remains.
In view of the untimely death of Late Zubeen Garg, all Inspectors of Schools/DEEO are instructed to postpone the half-yearly examination scheduled tomorrow until the cremation of the mortal remains of the legendary artist,” the minister said in a post on X.
The renowned singer died allegedly due to an “accident” while on a yacht trip. Earlier, he was known to die during scuba diving. He was going to sing at the North East India Festival (NEIF) which has been cancel ed now.

Condolences poured in as the news of the singer’s death came in. Prime minister Narendra Modi expressed shock over his death and said, “Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Zubeen Garg Death: India mourns loss
In a long post, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mourned the loss. “Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am in a loss of words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early, this was not an age to go,” he wrote on X.
Describing the talent of the late singer, he said, “Zubeen's voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.”
“Our future generations will remember him as a stalwart of Assam’s culture, and his works will inspire many more talented artists in the days and years to come. Beyond his music, his connection with people and passion for helping them will always be remembered. I will greatly cherish all my interactions with him. That magical voice has forever gone silent. Tragic beyond words! I grieve with my fellow citizens on the passing away of Zubeen. Rest well, Zubeen! You will always be Assam's favourite rockstar,” he added.
