IIT Bombay SC-ST students cell to conduct talk on caste discrimination in IITs

IIT Bombay: Ajantha Subramanian, professor of anthropology and South Asian Studies, Harvard University will talk on "Meritocracy and Democracy: The Social Life of Caste in India."
NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay's SC-ST students' cell is set to conduct a talk on caste discrimination in IITs on April 13, 2022, at 5:45 pm. The talk will include a seminar by Ajantha Subramanian, professor of anthropology and South Asian Studies, Harvard University on "Meritocracy and Democracy: The Social Life of Caste in India."
The seminar will be held at LA-001, IIT Bombay. The same will be broadcasted live in the IIT Bombay official YouTube channel.

According to the government data presented in Lok Sabha in December 2021, suicides in IITs , National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) along with central universities were up to 122. Out of this, the majority were reported from the Other Backward Classes (OBC). About 41 OBC students died by suicide between 2014 and 2021, out of which, 14 were in central universities, followed by IITs and NITs with 14 and 11 cases respectively. 37 students died by suicide in central universities of whom 24 were ST students. IISc Bengaluru and IISER saw a total of nine suicide deaths. Four of them were reserved, category students.
