NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced a "Young Research Fellow" programme for undergraduate (UG) students to motivate them towards careers in research and application of deeper learning.
This programme is similar to the advanced undergraduate research opportunities programme ‘SuperUROP’ of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is open for third-year UG and dual-degree students of IIT Madras.
The programme is designed and funded by the IIT Madras 1979 alumni batch.
The official agreement was signed on July 10, 2020 between IIT Madras dean of alumni and corporate relation Mahesh Panchagnula and twenty-four alumni of the 1979 batch.
Students from other institutes can also allowed to participate in the programme and students get the opportunity to do the one-on-one interaction with the IIT faculties.
Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT Madras said: “IIT Madras has long been known for producing world-class undergraduate students. Today, IITM is very much a research-intensive university where world-class research is a daily pursuit. This program blends these two strengths by giving select undergraduate students an opportunity to discover the excitement of research early.”
Further speaking about this initiative, Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of engineering, MIT, who founded the ‘Super-UROP’ program at MIT, and advised on the creation of YRF program, said: “I wish you all success for the YRF program. Involving undergraduates in research will foster an appreciation for deeper learning and innovation, enabling their success in a wide array of career paths, including graduate studies.”
