IIT Madras to launch master’s programme in electric vehicles

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is set to launch an interdisciplinary dual degree (IDDD) master’s programme in electric vehicles for the IIT Madras BTech and dual degree students. Through this programme, the institute will provide its undergraduates with an option to upgrade to the IDDD programmes.

Enrolment in this programme will begin from January 2022 during the third year of BTech and dual degree programmes. IITM plans to take in 25 students for the initial batch.

‘Students who enrol for the electric vehicle masters programme will be equipped with the necessary skills to begin their career in the electric mobility sector. Under this system, the students can study for five years and obtain BTech in a parent discipline and M.Tech. in an interdisciplinary area,’ said a statement from IIT Madras .

“This will provide more flexibility to students, enabling them to choose courses across disciplines, and enhance their skills and knowledge in modern interdisciplinary areas that have a huge role to play in the future of engineering and technology,” it said.

‘Opportunities for these students in the EV product development will include EV integration, vehicle aggregate engineering, communication and calibration, verification and validation, and product and portfolio planning,’ said a statement from IIT Madras.

“The master’s programme in electric vehicles will have the combined contribution from eight departments to instill in the students the skill sets necessary to engineer electric vehicles. The course structure is crafted in such a way to develop enough depth in each domain, including vehicle basics, EV aggregates such as batteries and motors,” said T Asokan, the head of the department of engineering design, IIT Madras.
