IIT Roorkee first to establish standards clubs across 14 departments; inauguration tomorrow

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has become the first IIT to establish standards clubs across 14 departments in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS). The initiative aims to introduce quality assurance and standardisation in engineering, technology, and policy-making, as per the official statement.

The standards clubs in 14 departments will host workshops, technical sessions, and hand-on projects, where students will contribute actively to the field of standardisation, the IIT Roorkee said.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, director general, BIS, will inaugurate 14 standard clubs at the engineering institute on February 27, 2025.

Expressing his thoughts over the initiative, Tiwari said: "In academic institutions, schools, standard clubs are being established by BIS with an objective to sensitize young members of society about the importance of standards in improving quality of life. By involving students from diverse disciplines, the initiative fosters a comprehensive understanding of standards as a driving force for innovation, quality enhancement, and economic growth."

Last year, the officials from the BIS visited the IIT Roorkee and engaged with students, mentors over insights into the importance of standardisation in research, academia, and industry.

IIT Roorkee: List of 14 departments

Sharing the importance of the standardisation field, Kamal Kishore Pant, director, IIT Roorkee, said: "Being the first IIT to establish Standards Clubs across 14 departments underscores IIT Roorkee's commitment to excellence in education and research. This initiative will not only equip students with industry-relevant skills but also strengthen India's position in global standardization efforts."

The 14 departments that took part in the initiative includes civil engineering, hydrology, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical and industrial engineering, earthquake engineering, earth sciences, electrical engineering, metallurgical and materials engineering, water resources development and management, design, chemical engineering, polymer and process engineering, Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED), and computer science and engineering.

The departments will engage in interdisciplinary collaborations, resulting in increased score and impact of standardisation across several domains, the institute added.

Recently, the IIT Roorkee figured out the defence mechanism of a superbug that could be useful for the medical science. The researchers revealed the attack and defence systems of the superbug called 'Acinetobacter baumannii.'
