St George’s University, Northumbria University invite Class 11, 12 students for “mini-med”

NEW DELHI: St George’s University (SGU) and Northumbria University are inviting applications for a 3-day course on mini-med at the Northumbria University campus in Newcastle, UK. The course will be held from June 13 to 15. The application is open to students from Class 11 and 12. Interested and eligible students must email the associate director of international academic affiliations at SGU, Lily Phommarach, at aphommarack@sgu.edu.

SGU has been organising mini-med courses since 2019 to provide school students with opportunities to gain insight into medical education. As per the official notice, this year, Northumbria University will partner with SGU to host the participants considering the increased number of South Asian students who graduate from SGU.

Students will get the chance to build professional connections, attend lectures and obtain practical experience with the help of training, patient simulation and lab work. Along with this, the students get exposure to a variety of topics that they will study during medical courses. The course will also focus on the history of medicine, terminologies used in anatomy studies, studies on the human nervous system, medical ethics, mental health, and emergency medicines.

After students have successfully completed the coursework, they will be given certificates and time to engage with the medical-academic professionals present during the sessions.

Speaking on the aim of organising mini-med, Lily Phommarack said: “It's imperative for prospective medical students to gain an insight into their chosen field before making any decisions about their higher education. Therefore, the primary objective of the “Mini-Med” course is to give students an in-depth perspective about what to expect while they are being trained to be a doctor and to envision themselves embarking on a global career in medicine”.
