Tamil Nadu KG, play schools not to reopen on November 1, says minister: Report

NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu government has decided not to resume Classes for KG and play schools on November 1, school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said on Monday, as per a Times of India report.

According to the report, the state government had earlier announced that play schools, nursery schools, and Anganwadi Centres will reopen for physical classes from November 1. However, the government has deferred the decision now.

“We have discussed the issue with the chief minister MK Stalin. We have prepared safety measures and standard operating procedures to reopen schools for Classes 1 to 8 from November 1. We do not want to reopen KG classes along with Classes 1 to 8,” the education minister told TOI.

The minister added that before allowing those students to return to schools, they have to prepare detailed SOPs and then allow them to attend physical classes, as per the report.

Tamil Nadu schools resumed physical classes for Classes 9 to 12 on September 1, 2021. Schools also reopened for Classes 6 to 8. However, primary school students have not attended physical classes since March 2020.

The state declared holidays for schools from October 14 to 16 for celebration of festivals.

Moreover, recently, school education minister Poyyamozhi said that Tamil Nadu Classes 10, 12 will not have quarterly or half-yearly examinations this academic year.

Anbil Mahesh said, “We are exploring the possibility of having a combined mock exam, before the board examination, in December instead of the half-yearly and quarterly examinations.”

Meanwhile, the states like Karnataka and Maharashtra have decided to reopen schools for primary classes from October 25.
