DU to frame policy on use of social media; teachers condemn move to 'curb free-speech'

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi has constituted a committee to frame policy on the use of social media by DU teachers and other employees. The Delhi University teachers have condemned the ‘regressive’ move against free-speech.

In an official notification, the university stated: "The competent authority of the university has constituted a committee pertaining to the use of social media platforms in respect of the employees of the university for framing of such policy of the university."

The six-member committee will be led by Delhi University Computer Centre (DUCC) director Sanjeev Singh. School of Open Learning(DU SOL) principal Ajay Jaisawal is among the five members of the committee.

The faculty members said that the decision has been taken to keep surveillance on teachers who posts critical of the university on social media platforms.

DU teacher Sanjaya Bohidar wrote: “No to hiding from public gaze. Imbibing the intolerance of the bosses. The DU administration responds to the exposure of its plagiarism ridden policy proposal and its attempt to undermine the public character of the University through an action plan of ever increasing dependence on private funding.”

“That a public institution and an institution of higher learning is being administered with an intent to silence free and fearless expression of opinions and ideas is anathema to the very idea of a university. Not surprising, since the action plan tabled in the Academic Council desired concocting only positive stories to create a brand image for greater private funding,” he wrote on Facebook.

“A matter of grave concern for all those who value education, accountability and democracy,” he added.

Mithuraaj Dhusiya, elected member of DU Academic Council said: "Public universities are meant to foster free speech and multiple perspectives. If DU tries to censor ideas and speeches of its employees on social media platforms, it will be very unfortunate and regressive. We will strongly protest against such draconian measures both inside and outside the Academic Council."
