UPSC 2021 Result: Delhi’s Shruti Sharma bags AIR 1, JMI VC visits home to congratulate

NEW DELHI: In the Union Public Service Commission’s Civil Services, 2021 final result, Delhi-based Shruti Sharma emerged the topper, on Monday.

Sharma, an alumnus of St Stephen’s College of Delhi University (DU) and completed her postgraduate studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Along with AIR 1, a total of 23 other candidates have qualified the Civil Services exam from Jamia Millia Islamia University’s free Residential Coaching Academy or RCA. The Jamia Millia runs a cost-free coaching programme for especially for minority community, and historically marginalised Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and women candidates. The coaching is given for preliminary, stage 1 and mains exam, stage two of the national level exam.

“I'm very happy with my result. My strategy was to make my own notes from newspapers and focus on answer writing practice for better presentation. I've used social media in a balanced way. My first preference is UP cadre” she told ANI.

JMI Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar congratulated Sharma and her family members at her Delhi residence soon after the declaration of UPSC 2021 results. The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by registrar, Nazim Husain Al Jafri, director of RCA Abid Hakeem.

Ankita Agarwal , who secured the second position said she would like to work for women empowerment and primary healthcare after joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), as per PTI. "I am very happy to have got the second rank. I have opted for the IAS and would like to work for women empowerment, primary healthcare and school education sectors after joining the service," she told PTI over phone from the academy.

On women securing the top three ranks in the civil services examination 2021, Agarwal said, "It is a matter of great pride for me and for the entire country that women have got the top three positions in the examination."

Elated over her selection in the civil services examination, Gamini Singla , who bagged the third rank said women are capable of achieving anything through their hard work and dedication. “I am really happy. It is like a dream come true. I have opted for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and would like to work for the development of the country and welfare of people,” Singla told PTI over the phone from Anandpur Sahib in Punjab.

“I used to study for 9-10 hours a day. I took coaching from Vinod sir in Patiala. Mostly I did self-study preparing for the examination, and finally, I got through. My father played an important role in helping me prepare for the exam,” she said. Asked about women bagging top three ranks in the exam, she said, “This shows women are capable of achieving anything through their hard work and dedication”.

This year, in UPSC Civil Services result a total of 685 candidates have qualified. A total of 200 candidates have been selected for Indian Police Services (IPS) rank whereas 37 candidates have been shortlisted for the Indian Foreign Services (IFS) rank.
