COVID-19: Gujarat cancels university exams for over 9.5 lakh students

Download NowNEW DELHI: Gujarat canceled all university exams for over 9.50 lakh undergraduate college students due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Gujarat chief minister, Vijay Rupani, canceled university exams amids the second wave of COVID-19 and the cyclone Tauktae.
He granted merit-based progression to the second, fourth and sixth-semester students of all government and private universities of the state. The only exception are students in medical and paramedical programmes. Gujarat had closed all colleges in mid-April.
The announcement from the chief minister’s office says: “In a major relief for over 9.50 lakh undergraduate college students, CM Shri Vijay Rupani decides to grant merit-based progression to the 2nd, 4th & 6th semester students, other than medial-para medical courses, of all the Govt and Pvt colleges/universities of the state.”

The state government had granted mass promotion to the students of Classes 1 to 9 and Class 11 and had plans of conducting Class 10 and 12 exams in May. When coronavirus cases suddenly started increasing, the Class 10 board exams were cancelled and the students promoted. The decision on the Class 12 board exams decision is yet to be taken.
By the end of April 17, as many as 14 states had closed all universities and colleges. Despite that, COVID-19 has claimed a large number of teachers and staff members of universities and colleges across the country. Central universities such as Aligarh Muslim University and Delhi University have lost large numbers of active and retired teachers and administrators. Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) and Central University of Gujarat have also lost teachers in the pandemic.
