IIT Guwahati researchers develop method for fast evaporation of droplets

NEW DELHI : Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati developed a method to control the lifetime of droplets containing suspended nanoparticles. The process will be helpful in diagnostics and inkjet printing, a statement from the institute said.

The suspended nanoparticles are magnetically active and therefore, can be brought under control in a magnetic environment.

The team worked on the exploration of species transport between droplets. The team led by Pranab Kumar Mondal, assistant professor in the department of mechanical engineering, IIT Guwahati and his student Sudip Shyam, a PhD scholar in the institute. The research work has been done in collaboration with Balkrishna Mehta associated with the department of mechanical engineering, IIT Bhilai, Madhya Pradesh.

The research revealed that the mixing between two droplets can be decreased significantly if there is a force of the magnetic field involved.

The outcome of the research, the statement says, can be beneficial in the area of biomedical diagnostics, whereby rapid and efficient mixing between fluids is of utmost importance.

The results of this work have recently been published in “SOFT MATTER” a journal belonging to the Royal Society of Chemistry.
