NEP 2020: UGC issues guidelines for internship-embedded degree programs

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission launched the guidelines for higher education institutions to offer internship-embedded degree programs on Friday.
The guidelines were formally released in a virtual “conclave on transformational reforms in higher education under the National Education Policy, 2020 ”, by the education minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.
Sanjay Dhotre, minister of state for education, said that the internships in degree courses will be instrumental in strengthening the employability of students. “The apprenticeship-integrated degree programme will allow the higher education institutions to prepare the students for the need[s] of [the] job market,” he added.
A webinar for creating a roadmap to roll out these degree programs at the earliest was also conducted.

The conclave, which prime minister Narendra Modi addressed , included sessions dedicated to significant aspects of education covered under the NEP 2020. Participants at the launch also discussed the holistic and multidisciplinary aspects of the NEP powered by quality research and equitable use of technology.
Apart from UGC chairman and secretary, eminent academics from Indian Institute of Technology- Madras, All India Council for Technical Education and Indian Institute of Science joined the virtual ceremony.
As part of holistic education, the NEP 2020 proposed that students at all higher educational institutes will be provided with opportunities for internships with local industry, businesses and arts. The policy also includes research internships at the educational institutions to further improve their employability.
